Aim Higher

Aim Higher is an exciting partnership between Portway Junior School and Winchester University and is all part of developing an understanding of the importance of higher education.

When they are in Year 5 pupils are able to work with students from the university on a range of activities about career choices and the necessary skills.

In Year 6 our pupils spend a day visiting Winchester University campus. They have a tour round and see where and how students live whilst they are away from home, they learn about the different courses offered at the university and the ever widening range of degrees and courses that can be completed and come back to school buzzing about their experience!

At the end of Year 6, all of the pupils participate in a Graduation ceremony at The Lights theatre in town. They receive a certificate congratulating them on completing their junior school education and reminding them that they could have a place at university. Each child dresses up in a graduation cap and gown and receives their award from the Vice-Principle of Winchester University and congratulations from the Mayor of Andover and Mr Deery. Parents are invited to the ceremony and the children also receive a graduation photograph after the event.

Aim Higher is an exciting project for us to be involved in and we take seriously our responsibility to encourage all of our pupils to enjoy their education beyond their junior school experience.
