Green Day 2011

Portway GREEN Day - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle - Friday 8th July

This term the Eco Team has been focussing on recycling and this week is Green Week at Portway, where we will learn about the problems caused by litter and waste.

On Friday 8th July, we are going to have a dress down day, where we will wear as much green as we can, to raise awareness of the need to conserve resources and to reduce, reuse & recycle.

Instead of bringing in money, 'payment' for dress down day is something that can be recycled both to save resources and to help us or other organisations to raise funds.

PLEASE ONLY SEND THINGS THAT ARE ON THE LIST

 THANK YOU

What to bring:

What

Why

Mobile phones - they do not have to work

The mineral coltan is mined in the Congo rainforest to make the rare metal tantalum for mobile phone components.

Components from unwanted phones can be recycled, thus reducing the need to mine and the devastating effect this has on the forest and its inhabitants.

Printer cartridges

About 3.5 litres of oil are needed to make ONE laser printer cartridge and 90 ml of oil for each inkjet cartridge.

The plastic used in a cartridge is expected to take up to 1000 years to decompose.

Aluminium - CLEAN cans, foil, ready meal dishes, yogurt tops

1. Aluminium is made from bauxite. It is VERY costly to extract bauxite but VERY easy to recycle aluminium. Recycling is much more energy efficient than making new.

2. All the aluminium we collect will go to the Andover Magpie Community Centre, which manages local aluminium banks.

DO THE ALUMINIUM TEST - scrunch it up! If it stays scrunched it's aluminium. If it doesn't, it isn't!

Stamps

Oxfam sends them to their specialist stamp shops, from where they are sold to collectors worldwide, thus raising funds for Oxfam.

Tetra Pak Cartons - WASH & SQUASH!

Juice & Milk cartons with the Tetra Pak name or logo (look for it on the carton - usually underneath) CANNOT go into the recycling bin - it is more than just cardboard.

All Paks will be taken to the Tetra Pak bank at George Yard car park.

Shoes

Someone else can use them.

All shoes donated will go to support Hampshire Air Ambulance.

Clothes

Someone else can use them.

All clothes donated will go to support Hampshire Air Ambulance.

Socks - MUST BE CLEAN!

The Eco Team and helpers will REUSE your old and odd socks to make puppets for children at the infants.
