For many years Portway Junior has considered itself as a 'Green School'. We have had a lot of success and were awarded a Silver Eco-Schools Award.
We embarked on a project with the support of Hampshire County Council's School Landscape Programme. Essentially it involved developing our school grounds as an outside classroom, a means of teaching not only environmental awareness and good citizenship, but of effectively delivering other subject areas in the curriculum.
We all knew that just the factfinding, consulting, discussing and re-zoning of our 11 acre site, shared with the infant school, would take a long time but we were determined to undertake small projects to keep the early momentum going and meet our commitment to being a healthy, environmentally aware and rights respecting school.
