Marvellous Maths!
As you will be aware, we take very seriously our responsibility to prepare children for the future, and inspire them to achieve their potential. Our aim, in maths, is to have a consistent approach across the whole school, supported in the same way at home, to ensure that all children at Portway enjoy and achieve.
After several months of hard work, planning and consultation with parents we have produced the ultimate in self-help maths manuals - ‘Portway’s Marvellous Maths’ is a free DVD and booklet not to be missed!
The approaches to teaching and learning maths have changed as time has gone on and the focus now is on children having a thorough understanding of the basics before moving onto more complex methods.
There are clear steps to help children make good progress in maths and it is important that they understand each of these steps before moving on. It is not vital that every child reaches the final stage, it is more important that all children have a strategy they are confident with and can apply in lessons and assessments.
These new approaches are clearly demonstrated in the DVD and the accompanying booklet. We know that you are as committed as we are to support your children’s learning of maths using the same strategies we do at school and we hope that you will be able to make good use of these free resources!
Each Portway family will receive a copy of the DVD and accompanying booklet - we hope that they will make clearer some of the new strategies your children talk about and give you an understanding of how you can support your child at home in the same way as we do in school.
If you have any queries about the DVD or booklet, or would like something explained further, then please give the office a ring as they will be happy to make an appointment for you to talk with one of us.
Please use the links below to go to an online version of our new resources.
We would really like some feeback some please post a comment using the form below.
At the end of 1/2 term we will hold a draw of every family who sent in a comment and the winner will receive a special maths prize!
Many thanks.

"When I was at school I just remember doing the expanded column method (not that I knew it was called that). It seems much harder now having all the different ways of doing it. It certainly helps having this DVD so I can understand what my children are talking about when they mention number lines and hopefully I can help them more now."
"Watched with Adam and we both said that this was useful and will sit down and watch with other children too. Certainly taught me a few things."
