Roald Dahl Day

Roald Dahl Day was celebrated in whizpopping fashion at Portway Junior school on Tuesday September 13^th. We joined with hundreds of others around the globe to celebrate the famed story teller’s works.

Our staff and pupils joined in the fun by dressing for the day as characters from the author’s books and we welcomed a myriad of Oompa Loompas, Matildas, Willy Wonkas, Roly Poly Birds, gigantic Crocodiles and even a giraffe! Everyone took part in a range of activities celebrating not only Roald Dahl’s books, but also the love of reading.

We used the opportunity to launch our ‘Year of Reading’ – a time to encourage in all pupils a passion for reading and a love for the rich variety of authors that populate our lives. Pupils participate in a weekly ‘Golden Ticket’ draw and, after reading regularly throughout the week, have a chance of winning a book from the ‘Golden Suitcase’ to keep forever.

As many Roald Dahl books have been developed into films, our schoolday culminated in a ‘Pizza and Film Night’ held for all pupils and their families.

Many turned out to support the event, and vast amounts of pizza, that had been donated by the school’s kitchen staff, as well as the local branches of Tescos, Sainsburys, Waitrose, The Co-op and Dominos, was consumed! The money we raised through the event will be used to purchase new books for the weekly Golden Ticket draw!
