Sir George Visits Portway
Sir George Young MP has visited Portway Junior School to formally open some new ICT facilities. The school already boasts a modern 32 computer ICT suite but has now opened a ‘pod’ of 16 computers.
The computers are intended to improve the access to computers and ensure that the school is working at the cutting edge of technology. The new facility will be used for individuals, groups and whole classes through out the week and will also provide children the opportunity to use the facilities at lunchtime.
Ellen White, from Year 6, said:
“We are very lucky to have so many computers in the school. We really enjoy using them and have already been using them a great deal. I particularly like using it to access our worldwide community, which is safe environment to create our own web pages and communicate with children our age around the world.”
Dave Ireland, the school’s ICT manager said:
“The school’s new ICT facilities are a real bonus and add to our already excellent facilities. It gives us the opportunity to incorporate ICT into the curriculum much better than before. ICT is a real motivation for lots of children and has a real impact on their progress and attainment.”
As well as opening the suite Sir George also took part in a question and answer session with year 6 pupils. They asked lots of interesting questions including how Sir George was enjoying his new role, what he liked about being an MP and what advice he would give to those considering becoming an MP.
