Year 5 Visit to Winchester

On Wednesday 23rd March year 5 went to Winchester Cathedral. First we went to school when the whistle went we went inside our classes and Mr Ireland got us into groups. After we had all gone to the toilet we walked to the blue and grey coaches which were parked outside our school my group [group B] had to go on coach 1.It was hot and stuffy inside the coach but me and my partner Zoe didn’t mind. After 30 minutes of chatting we finally arrived at Winchester we parked near a statue, got out and started to walk in the direction of the cathedral. We stopped and Mr Ireland told us to respect the cathedral and the people worshipping there. When he had finished we carried on and then we saw it, the cathedral, standing proudly in the green grass.

Mr Ireland took us to a room where we could put our bags then told us what we were going to be doing. Our group did a tour around the cathedral. One thing that amazed me on that tour was that a giant stained glass window in the nave got smashed by Oliver Cromwell’s army in the civil war and people living near the cathedral collected the glass and tried to glue it together again but failed!

After that it was time to make some stained glass windows. First we looked at the ladies chapel then the fisherman’s chapel. Then we coloured in a piece of see through plastic to make our very own stained glass window mine looked brilliant! Then it was time for lunch we were led into the room with our bags in and had lunch. Soon after that we did the Tudor trail. We had to look around the cathedral looking for certain objects. I found it easy.

Finally we had to go we got on the hot stuffy coaches, which took us to school. Soon after we got to school it was time to go home. It was a great day we got loads of compliments and the day was enjoyed throughout.
