Sporting Update Summer 2015

Athletics: Last Thursday 45 Portway pupils represented the school at the annual area Athletics Tournament at the Charlton track. Once again it was a very enjoyable event and the weather was lovely! The team spirit of the children was amazing and they all gave absolutely everything and the team did very well all afternoon. The relay races were particularly successful and Portway won nearly every race! In the end Portway gained second place and were justbeaten by our friends from Balksbury who won this years’ event. It was a great afternoon and we are very proud of all who were involved.

We need to say thank you to Mrs Seymour who not only led our team but also organised the whole event! Also thank you to Miss Mullins, Mr Deery Jnr and Mrs Hammerton who went to the event and looked after the team and to all of the parents who helped out.

Kwik Cricket (Girls) Competition – Portway win the Plate!

Recently 8 of our year 6 girls represented the school at a kwik cricket competition. Most of them had not played a great deal before but made up for that with lots of enthusiasm. The day started with some training from a Hampshire Cricket Club coach and then the group stages commenced. The girls found this tough and struggled to win a game. Their heads didn’t drop and they went on to storm the plate competition games and ended up as the plate winners! They even beat Vigo in the final after losing to them earlier in the day. This was a brilliant result and testament to the resilience of the girls who attended. They never gave up and got better with each game! We are VERY proud of them! Many thanks to Mr Deery Junior for looking after them on the day.

Kwik Cricket (Boys) Competition – Portway are Champions!

Recently Mr Staff and Mr Deery Jnr took 16 mixed year 5’s and 6’s to a fun tournament at Andover cricket Club. The weather was lovely and the pupils really enjoyed themselves and improved their skills a great deal. Team 2 had some great games and kept battling throughout and got through to the quarter-finals but lost to Balksbury. Team 1 won all of their group games and then beat Vigo in the quarter final to set up a semi-final match with our friends from Anton. They managed to win that game then beat St John’s in the final to become 2015 champions! Well done to all of the pupils involved and thank you to Mr Staff & Mr Deery Jnr for taking the teams to the competition.
