Online Safety
The digital world is getting bigger - so our 'digital umbrella' is getting wider to cover it!
At Portway Junior, we recognise that our pupils aren't just 'using' the internet anymore - they are living in it. From gaming with friends to researching homework, their online footprint is growing every day.
As the digital landscape expands, so does our commitment to your child's safety. We've moved beyond just 'blocking the bad stuff' to building digital citizenship. We believe in empowering pupils to make smart choices and supporting parents as you navigate this fast-moving world alongside them.
🏆 We are "Internet Legends"!
This year, we are officially bringing the Google & Parent Zone: Be Internet Legends program into our classrooms. It's an interactive way for children to become 'safer, more confident explorers of the online world'.
The program is built on five core pillars that we'll be practising within school across their time with us:
-
Be Internet Sharp: Think before you share. (What’s okay to post, and what’s private?)
-
Be Internet Alert: Check it’s for real. (How to spot scams and "fake news.")
-
Be Internet Secure: Protect your stuff. (Creating strong passwords and keeping them safe.)
-
Be Internet Kind: Respect each other. (Treating people online as you would in the playground.)
-
Be Internet Brave: When in doubt, discuss. (Talking to a trusted adult when something feels "off.")
🤖 AI: Smart Tools, Safer Hands
We know Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the "talk of the playground." Whether it’s helpful chatbots or fun image generators, AI is a massive part of the future. We are teaching our pupils to be responsible AI pioneers by following these three golden rules:
-
AI is a Tool, Not a Person: AI can "hallucinate" (make mistakes that sound real). Always fact-check what it tells you.
-
Keep Your Secrets: Never tell an AI your name, address, or school. AI models "learn" from what you tell them, so keep it private.
-
Human First: AI can help kickstart a creative project, but it shouldn't do the thinking for you. Your unique voice is what matters most!
