About Our School

Portway Junior School is characterised by the strong relationships which exist between the pupils, staff, parents and governors. We are very much part of our local community and enjoy many strong links throughout the locality, particularly with Portway Infant School and Harrow Way Secondary School. We enjoy good relationships with a strong and supportive governing body who are committed to the continuing development of the school. Our fantastic PTA also works extremely hard to provide a wide range of activities throughout the year to raise valuable extra funds for our school.

We believe in being open, friendly and honest in our communications and circulate a fortnightly newsletter, the Portway Press, in order to keep all in our community up-to-date with our news and events. We recognise that, through the hard work and commitment of all those in school, we are able to build on and maintain our high standards.

Our History

Portway Junior was built in 1952 and is an attractive and spacious place in which to work and learn. We have two well-stocked and vibrant libraries, a large hall with a purpose-built stage which is used for assemblies and performances, as well as a separate dining room. Our field extends to seven acres and is marked out for a wide variety of sports and athletics which are enjoyed throughout the year. On the perimeter of the field is our 'Forest School' with space for exploration, tree climbing, hands-on learning and a firepit. This provides children with opportunities to learn, not only about the natural environment but also to develop confidence and self-esteem and to become healthy, resilient, creative and independent learners. We are also lucky to have our own school garden where we grow a wide range of fruit and vegetables, as well as flowers.

The Future

For a long time I have been very proud of all we achieve at Portway and, alongside a committed staff team and wonderful children, I know that this will continue. I feel extremely privileged to have been chosen to continue to build upon the success the school has already achieved and am very much looking forward to the next part of our journey together. I believe that we are a friendly and happy school where children grow and thrive and we look forward to welcoming you to our family.
